Past Productions

In 2009, the Depot Theater Company published “Gate Alert!” – a history of the company from its beginnings in 1984 through the 2009 season.  Copies of this book are still available through the Depot Theater Company office for $35.00.  This “Past Productions” page is a sampling of information found in the book.

“Gate Alert!” refers to a piece of theater history dating back to the beginnings at Boot Hill Museum.  The theater was housed in the Old House Saloon and the entrance gate was located at the opposite end of the complex.  Each night, when it came time to open the house for the evening’s performance – the announcement “Gate Alert!” went out to let everyone know that we were opening up for the audience to enter.

SEASON ONE – March 1984

The company’s first dinner theater production consisted of two one-act plays.

“Sundance” was a good example of a new form of play called serio-comedy which dealt with serious themes in a comic manner yet retaining all the depth of a complete dramatic piece. Cast members included Greg Smith, Ken Dean, Tod Demuth, Raymond Mettling, and Dean Freeman.

“Drunkard’s Wife” was a pure melodrama, the kind that the audience could get involved in, reacting to the actors as they spoke directly to the audience. Cast members included Kent Ross, Tod Demuth, Connie Hudnett Penick, and Theresa Eades.

SEASON TWO 1984-1985

The second season included two dinner theater offerings – a fall production of “Count Dracula” and spring production of “Dames at Sea” – the first musical presented by the Company.  The season also included the second Christmas show in the Long Branch Saloon and a new summer production – the Beeson & Harris Firecracker Revue.

“Count Dracula” by playwright Ted Tiller was reworked from Bram Stoker’s classic story of the suave vampire, updating the setting to 1930’s England, and adding comedic elements. The cast included Greg Smith (in the title role), Kent Ross, Raymond Mettling, Amy Brax, Sara McFarland, Tod Demuth, Lyn Yost, and Doug Austen.

“Dames at Sea” was an Off Broadway hit that brought stardom to Bernadette Peters, and is a campy show based on the nostalgia of Hollywood musicals of the 1930’s. It’s big-time New York, into which sweet little Ruby from faraway Hometown, U.S.A. has come to make it big on Broadway. Who should she chance to meet but another boy from Hometown, U.S.A.: Dick, a sailor, who also has ambitions as a songwriter. Ruby begins in the chorus, and by the end of the day, in true Hollywood fashion, Dick saves her doomed Broadway show with a smash tune, as Ruby becomes a star on the deck of a battleship.

The cast of “Dames at Sea” included Candy Pyle, Brian Richardson, Don Pfister, Greg Smith, Karen Warshaw, Jill Austen, Jana Ross, Mischel Raney, Cyndi Hudnett, and Theresa Eades.
